SHALDON WATER CARNIVAL SUCESS - VISIT SOUTH DEVON press releaseDate posted: 18/08/2010
Dressed crab….how a famous Aussie chef made the Shaldon Water Festival the best ever!
Dressed crab with an Australian twist was very much on the menu this year for the highly successful Shaldon Water Festival in South Devon at the weekend. The famous Australian chef Bill Grainger was dressed as a crab as part of the water carnival’s procession to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the event.
Visit South Devon, which helped to organise the event, says that the Festival has enjoyed its most successful year on record with more than a thousand people turning out across the day to enjoy a much loved community festival.
Bill Grainger was filming the Festival as part of a documentary series when he decided to enter the spirit of the carnival by dressing as a crab for the highlight of the day, the procession of decorated boats.
“The Let’s get Cracking” campaign to promote South Devon crab was a big part of the Festival with competitions and demonstrations organised by renowned local chef Tim Bouget from the Ode restaurant. Tim and local crab fisherman Rob Simmonds were interviewed by Bill Grainger for a documentary series called Bill’s Secret Weekends which will be shown on the Good Food Channel sometime next year.
Rob Simmonds took Bill out crab fishing and he says that the Australian chef was really impressed by the local catch. He said, “Being Australian, Bill Grainger was really convinced that Australian mud crabs were the best in the world until he tried our wonderful South Devon variety. He was very impressed by both the crabs and the beauty and drama of our South Devon coastline.” Bill also interviewed local sand eel fishermen and he also spent some of his time cooking the local delicacy of sand eels at the Kingswear Castle where he and his TV crew had been staying.
The Marketing Manager for Visit South Devon, Sarah Streeter says that the Shaldon Water Festival was the perfect event to showcase the area’s fine local food and restaurants as well as the wonderful community spirit: “This year’s event was a resounding success and it was a real bonus to have Bill Grainger there to film it all. He was left in no doubt about the fantastic sea food we have like South Devon crab and the amazing chefs and local fishermen who make the area what it is. The Festival will be able to build on this for a more spectacular event next year.”

HAVE A CRACKING TIME IN SHALDON
The Shaldon water carnival is run by a team of tireless volunteers whose aim is to provide fun, whilst generating funds for local charities and organisations. It raises around £2000 worth of donations every year which part funds sports, arts and educational activities throughout the area. Despite being run for 50 years, there’s only been 48 Carnival Queens (including Georgina Bayliss, the 2010 Queen). For the first two years, the Carnival crowned a King Neptune (usually local fishermen) but over time and due to popular demand, the old sea salts were replaced with young ladies In 50 years, the Carnival’s only been cancelled once, in 1982, and that was probably due to The Falklands, so not a bad record to have! This year, the Carnival is working closely with Visit South Devon, the region’s official marketing organisation, to raise the profile of Shaldon locally and nationally as part of their recently launched South Devon Crab campaign. VSD’s Marketing Manager, Sarah Streeter, said ‘We’ve been working with Tim Bouget from Ode in Shaldon for some time now on the South Devon Crab campaign and he suggested that we use the Water Carnival as a way of highlighting the work we do. The location’s fantastic, the crabbing events should attract a whole new audience to the area and there’s even a celebrity dressed as a crab – I can’t tell you more, it’s an official secret, but do come along and find out who he/she is!’.

The day’s jam packed with beachside activities including a crabbing competition, crab sand sculpture competition, cookery demos, a painting competition, fancy dress parade, fishing demonstrations, pillow fight and the not-to-be missed parade of decorated boats. Plus from 6pm ‘til 11.30pm, there’s live entertainment on the Village Green. For more information on the day’s events, visit www.visitsouthdevon.co.uk/crab.

ODE Restaurant
7. I love this restaurant, run by a husband-and-wife team, Tim and Clare Bouget, who really understand the meaning of the word hospitality. Tim has cooked all over the world, and here, with some of the best fish and shellfish right on his doorstep, he knows that the way to make such great produce shine is to let it speak for itself.
